Luis Medina

Luis Medina has always played card games, whether it be bridge, gin, canasta or king, but it’s poker that concentrates his efforts. Of all the variants, he enjoys No Limit Hold’em most, because he finds it the most challenging. He’s a business consultant by trade but always finds the time to play poker, both live and online. As part of his education, he studied in the US, and he started playing poker in Atlantic City. Luis won two live tournaments at the Taj Mahal and Tropicana casinos, and his career grew from there. He’s been able to develop his game and is now a real all-rounder, playing all variants of poker. His specialty is No Limit Hold’em, either nine-handed or heads-up, but he also likes to play Stud, HORSE, Razz and Omaha.

In live poker, Luis has had some notable performances. The Austrian Masters in 2001 was particularly successful as he cashed in the heads-up tournament. He also made money finishes in local tournaments in Portugal, and he holds the distinction of captaining his country at the live final of the World Cup of Poker, most recently in 2007 in Barcelona when Portugal finished in fifth position. Luis also cashed twice at the 2010 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA), good for a combined total of $45,000. Online, Luis plays a lot of multi-table tournaments on PokerStars and can regularly be found at the final table. He has a big World Championship of Online Poker cash to his name as well – a third place in 2003 in Event 1, the $109 No Limit Hold’em.

When he’s not playing poker, Luis likes scuba diving, skiing, hiking, cinema and music. He’s also keen to use his poker success to help people, and he’s involved in various charity projects including environmental protection volunteer work. He believes that poker is a great opportunity to give something back, and he aims to use his status as a Team PokerStars Pro to have a positive impact in the wider community.
