Ivan Demidov
Ivan Demidov is at the forefront of a wave of highly skilled and highly competitive Russian poker players that have hit the scene in recent years. Ivan, a former semi-pro Starcraft player, graduated from Moscow State University in 2004 with a degree in Math. From there he began playing online and in the card rooms of Moscow, a hotbed for high stakes poker action.
A high stakes cash player at one of these games offered to stake Ivan in Las Vegas, and the 2008 World Series of Poker* was a huge turning point for the 27-year old. First, Ivan went deep in a $1,000 No Limit Hold’em event, finishing 11th for $39,854, before negotiating a field of 6,844 and seven days of hi-octane poker to reach the final table of the $10,000 Main Event.
As the world waited for the World Series of Poker* Main Event Final Table, during an unprecedented pause of 117 days, Ivan made his intentions clear. If any indication was required as to his ability, his third place finish at the World Series of Poker* Europe £10,000 Main Event in London showed that the young man from Russia was a serious player. He pocketed $608,995 for that performance, and for many astute observers, the result installed Ivan as the favorite for the WSOP* Main Event.
That Ivan was able to carry this expectation and bring his game to bear at the final table in Vegas was further proof that the Moscovite is a top talent. Ivan played the final table superbly, but was unable to find traction in the heads-up battle against Peter Eastgate. He faced a near 3:1 chip disadvantage at the outset, and was unable to get the better of his Danish opponent. No matter, Ivan still took home $5,809,595 for second place which rocketed him into first place on the Russian all-time money list with $6,483,671, leapfrogging Team PokerStars Pro Alex Kravchenko.
Ivan is a both a highly respected poker player and a grounded young man. In the aftermath of his Vegas success he said he would be looking to buy a house in Moscow, and he will also now have a little more spare cash to indulge his other passions of skiing, white water rafting and scuba diving. Ivan Demidov is a member of Team PokerStars Pro and plays online under the name of ‘Ivan Demidov’.
