Greg Raymer

Greg Raymer was a patent lawyer before his career changed direction to that of full time poker player. At the start of his career he added to his bankroll by selling fossil card protectors to players at the table, a sideline that led to him being dubbed ‘FossilMan’ which remains his nickname today. But Greg, originally from North Dakota, would soon have few bankroll problems.

After proving himself in various tournaments Greg’s first World Series came in 2001 and he came close to a final table appearance in the $1,500 Omaha Hi-Lo Split where he finished 12th for $5,345. Having returned to the World Series each year 2004 would provide an altogether different outcome. Playing in the main event the year after Chris Moneymaker had gone from amateur to World Champion; Raymer navigated his way through a huge field of 2,576 to come through as the winner, earning a record $5,000,000.

It was an historic win and since then further success has come for Greg at the World Series, including four final tables and cash finishes that take his career earnings to over $650,000. A year after his World Series win he came close again when, in a field far greater than the year before, he finished 25th, good for $300,000. Greg also triumphed as part of a five-man Team USA and the 4th Annual PokerStars World Cup of Poker in 2007. The 2009 WSOP* started with a bang for Greg, as he final tabled in Event 2, the $40,000 No Limit Hold’em, playing through a star-studded field to finish in third place and collect $774,927 in prize money.

It’s the golf course for Greg in his spare time, like many poker players. He’s also an advanced Sudoku puzzle player and enjoys the tennis and bowling games on his Wii console.

With a World Series Main Event title to his name Greg’s place in the history books of poker is secured, with a track record that it likely to be added to again and again. As a member of Team PokerStars Pro he plays under the name ‘FossilMan’.
